Paint and Wallpaper
Paint and wallpaper are two of the easiest ways to revitalize a room or an entire house. Relatively inexpensive, there are a myriad of choices when it comes to either one of these wall coverings.
Overview of Paint
Paints are made with pigments, binders, and thinners-either water or solvents. Pigments are what give the paint its color. The quality of the binder, which for latex paint is either latex or acrylic, is what determines the quality of the paint.
Types of Paint
Paint may be primarily classified into three categories:
1. Oil-based paint (alkyd)
Oil-based paints last much longer, but are more time consuming to use. Paintbrushes and rollers must be cleaned with solvents such as turpentine or paint thinner, petroleum based chemicals that should only be used in well-ventilated areas.
2. Water-based paint
Water-based paint dries solely due to evaporation.
3. Latex-based paint
Latex-based pain is easy to use, dries quickly, without the noxious smell that oil-based paints have.
Paint is available in just about any color you can imagine. If you have a favorite color that you would like to use but don’t know the name of the color, it is possible for the hardware store to match it exactly using computer technology.
Overview of Wallpaper
Originally made from paper, wallpaper today is made from vinyl so that it is more durable and easier to clean and maintain. Wallpaper can add beauty and charm to a room and like painting, is a fairly easy do it yourself project that yields quick results and maximum impact.
Wallpaper is available in a wide range of patterns, colors, and styles. There is traditional wallpaper to cover entire walls as well as wallpaper borders in varying widths. The most important thing to remember when hanging wallpaper is to start your wallpapering project in a corner and to properly prepare the surface of the walls. Newer homes may have smoother walls than older homes do; however no walls are perfectly square or even. Most wallpaper, especially wallpaper borders, is pre-pasted, which makes it easy to apply because there is no need for messy wallpaper paste.
When choosing wallpaper, keep in mind where it is to be used. For example, wallpaper for the kitchen should be rugged and easy to clean. Wallpaper for the bathroom should be able to withstand heat and humidity. Wallpaper for children’s bedrooms should be durable and easy to clean as well.
